Winslow Homer (1836 -1910)
School Time, 1874
Oil on canvas, 12.5 x 19.2 in
National Gallery of Art, Washington D.C.
Teacher and students with lunch buckets are gathering to start the school day. This is the same red one-room schoolhouse with a steep hill rising behind it as you see in the "mountain" version of the Snap the Whip. School Time is a rarely seen painting as it is usually not on display at the National Gallery, but it obviously has close ties to Hurley.
