Winslow Homer  (1836 -1910)
Noon Recess
Harper's Weekly, Vol. XVII, June 28, 1873
Wood engraving on paper

A child is being kept in at recess by his teacher to make up work instead of joining his friends outside.  Through the window the other children can be seen in the front yard playing snap the whip, the same game depicted by Homer in the two Snap the Whip paintings.  The teacher's thoughts seem to be in a far away place.  In a playful finishing touch, Homer has chalked his initials on the blackboard.
