On the Farm

The end of the Civil War marked a shift in the American economy from an agricultural base to manufacturing. Homer depicts aspects of American life and culture that were becoming less prevalent in his world. For many Americans, these images recalled simpler times in their lives before the chaos of the Civil War; for others, it depicted lives returning to normal after the war.
