Bad Dominie: A Misogynist Minister and the Glorious Revolution in Ulster County
Presented by Evan Haefeli
In 1688, a Dutch army led by Prince William of Orange invaded England and overthrew its reigning monarch, James II, because of his promotion of Catholicism more than his Protestant British subjects could tolerate. This event came to be known as the Glorious Revolution, and had repercussions not only in England, but also for the Dutch colonies in the New World, including Ulster County.
The Hurley Heritage Society welcomes history professor Dr. Evan Haefli of Texas A&M as he talks about this little discussed but important period in local history. Professor Haefli also discusses the even less familiar scandal of a notorious Kingston and Hurley misogynist minister, and how his trial is the source of fascinating insights into life for women in the 17th century.
