OUR APRIL 2005 PROGRAM

“EVIDENCE OF DUTCH CULTURE IN COASTAL NEW YORK”

Lecture presented by Dr. Gaynell Stone
Thursday, April 28th7:30 PM
At The Hurley Reformed Church

The first English settlers of New York lived in a multiethnic, multicultural “Dutch” world for many years. Slides illustrate the Dutch-shaped landscape through village layout, settlement patterns, cemeteries and grave stones, and architecture. New York’s Dutch origins live on in material culture, customs, cuisine, gender relations, political systems, and surnames.

The presentation was made by Dr. Gaynell Stone, Museum Director, Suffolk County Archaeological Associations: Associate Professor, Suffolk County Community College.

This program was made possible through the support of The New York Council for the Humanities’ Speakers in the Humanities program.
