OPENS  MAY 3rd

EXHIBIT FOR 2008

BLUESTONE – A QUARRYMAN’S TALE

Follow Bluestone from its geological birth 360-385 million years ago to the present. In the 1830s quarrying began in Ulster County. Bluestone, from the area was used for much of “the sidewalks of New York”, and in the construction of famous buildings and bridges. In a short period of time the bluestone industry would employ as many as 10,000. Fortunes were made and lost. The discovery of Portland cement caused the demise of the bluestone industry. By the early 1900s, the stone business was almost gone. Today, numerous quarries still supply bluestone for sidewalks, patios and building facings. Beautiful works of art are being made out of bluestone.

Workers who mined and handled bluestone during the 19th and early 20th centuries have many stories to tell. Travel the plank Road, follow a quarry drivers’ workday and learn about some of their money woes. Cultural differences with the incoming immigrant labor force impacted the social and political history of the area.

HHS Heritage Walk

There is still time to reserve a brick in the Hurley Heritage Society Heritage Walk. The Society will use the proceeds of the brick sales to make needed capital repairs to the Jonathan Elmendorf house, where our museum resides. The first priority is to add a new roof to the structure.

Each brick will be dedicated to a person of the donor’s choice; an inscription will be etched in the brick and sealed for outdoor use. Why not show your support of the museum by creating a brick in your family’s name – or to honor someone close to you?

A donation of $120 will supply one brick in the walk. An inscription may be composed with as many as four lines of eighteen characters.

If you are interested please click here for the order form. Questions, call Wally Cook .(845) 338-2193 or  cooker.1@earthlink.net
